Hi all!
Important information from the meeting:

Lists of members on hour and attendance probation was presented

New Members:
Step 1: Eligibility (5 semesters of service so must join Sophomore year.)
Turn in Fees and Applications
Attend at least 50% of the meetings
Step 2: “I want to go to this event”
Submit a physical event proposal to Mr. Mapplebeck or through the link

Step 3: Tutoring
Submit one event proposal for all tutoring event(s)

Let your sophomore friends know that they are still eligible to join NHS.

Land Park Volunteer Corps Workday
Come join members of the community for the first Land Park Volunteer Corps workday of 2020 in William Land Park on Saturday, March 7th at 9 am. Come out to help trim, clean, weed, mulch and otherwise spiff up Land Park. Grab a pair of gloves and pitch in (you’ll even get a breakfast boost from Espresso Metro at the beginning of the day and a free BBQ lunch after you finish at 12 noon). The group meets directly behind Fairytale Town (3901 Land Park Drive). Groups and individuals are welcome. Conlin Tree Planting & Volunteer Day
Saturday, February 29th 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Conlin Sports Complex, 7895 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento.
Join District 7 Parks Commission Devin Lavelle and members of the Pocket Little League in a tree planting event. City of Sacramento Parks Arborist Jesus Munoz will lead the tree planting and equipment will be provided by City of Sacramento. Snacks will be provided by Parks Commissioner Devin Lavelle. All we need is you! Wear sunscreen, closed toed shoes and appropriate clothing. RSVP requested to parks@devinlavelle.com or for more information call: (916) 808-7192.

Events:

McKinley Park Rose Garden
Volunteer days this month are Sunday, Feb 9th and Sunday, Feb 16th.
All events are from 9 am to noon! We will continue pruning the roses, as well as doing other gardening chores! No age limit, training and supplies provided! If you have your own bypass clippers and gloves, please bring them.
All minors volunteering are required to fill out a volunteer waiver form which we can provide before the event! Please wear long pants, dress warmly, wear closed toed shoes, and a hat or visor.
The McKinley Rose Garden located at the corner of 33rd and H Streets (with free parking), is overseen by the non-profit Friends of East Sacramento, who were recently honored by the City of Sacramento’s Park’s Commission for providing “Community Enrichment” to the downtown area! Our Rose Garden was also featured in the movie “Lady Bird” and has 1,200 roses, the largest rose garden in Sacramento!

Railroad Museum Trip and Lunch
Saturday, February 8th – 10:00 am-3:00 pm.
Meet out front of Railroad Museum,125 I Street Sacramento, CA 95814. Tour through the museum learning about the history, stories and contributions of people working on the Transcontinental Railroad. Lunch afterwards. 3 volunteers needed. You will be working with youth and adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities.
The most important job our volunteers have is to interact positively and socialize with participants in Access Leisure activities so that they and you will have fun. Minimum age to volunteer is 16. Help make magic at Fairytale Town as a volunteer! Fairytale Town is looking for mature, dedicated, hard-working volunteers, that would like to give back to their community.

Assist with credential distributions, press box and serve as media runners.

Wheelchair Rugby

Help with facilitating the athletes in Wheelchair Rugby.  You will learn the rules and may be asked to participate in a wheelchair with the athletes.  4 volunteers needed.

Prudential Spirit Award

By National Honors Society

Students can apply at nassp.org/spirit or spirit.prudential.com

  • By November 5, 2019, students must submit their completed applications, and signed student/parent agreements, to a certifier. (Certifiers can be school principals or the head of a county 4-H organization, Girl Scout council, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or a Points of Light Global Network member.)
  • By November 15, 2019, certifiers select and certify top applicants for state-level judging.
  • On February 4, 2020, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards announces state-level winners for 2020.

NHS Application Deadline

Due to yearbook obligations, the application deadline will be moved to October 29th, 2019 in order for NHS to compile a roster for yearbook photos.

    ***Please submit your application via link https://forms.gle/ERvRUtCz1WwajucJ7 by 11:59 PM on October 29th, 2019.***

If you do not have access to the internet, please turn in your application into Rm 63, Mr. Mapplebeck’s classroom.

You can turn in your transcripts via paper or by emailing nhs.westcampus@gmail.com .

The club fee of  $10 must be turned into Jason or Tran by November 14th, 2019.
